About the Project
In 2023, Tom Sumter transformed his Bull Shoals backyard into a one-of-a-kind outdoor retreat using a mix of rough cut Eastern Red Cedar and live edge first cuts. Anchored by sturdy 6×6 cedar posts, the custom-built structure celebrates raw, organic design while delivering durability and visual impact.
The standout feature is the use of live edge cedar slabs, which bring an earthy, artistic flair to the space. These natural contours blur the boundary between landscape and structure, allowing the environment to feel fully integrated with the build.
Every element—from the hand-selected first cuts to the thoughtfully placed framing—reflects a commitment to craftsmanship and a deep appreciation for natural materials. The result is a warm, inviting space perfect for relaxing, gathering, and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors in Arkansas.
The use of live edge slabs not only enhances the visual appeal but also integrates the landscape into the structure, blurring the lines between man-made and natural. The thoughtful arrangement and meticulous craftsmanship make this backyard a true retreat, ideal for relaxation and entertainment. The wooden elements are beautifully showcased, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that enhances the outdoor living experience. This oasis stands as a testament to skillful design and a deep appreciation for nature’s aesthetics.
Project used live edge slabs, 6” x 6” posts, a variety of rough cut lumber, and first cuts.
